Abstract: В роботі розглядаються питання формування математичної компетентності курсантів та методики навчання вищої математики у закладах вищої освіти авіаційного профілю на прикладі виконання лабораторної роботи «Статистичне означення ймовірності», враховуючи принцип професійної спрямованості навчання. When teaching higher mathematics in an aviation educational institution, laboratory works are of great importance, in which it is necessary to process statistical data. There is no area of human activity that does not take into account incidental impacts, random factors and random measurements of the state of the studied objects. Without knowledge of the laws of random processes, without the ability to use in practice the basic concepts and results that relate to such processes, it is impossible to make the right decisions. Setting trials, choosing rational plans for their implementation, processing the results – all this leads to the need to master the methods of mathematical statistics. Equally important is the competency-based approach to learning, which means not only the formation of knowledge, skills and abilities of future aviation professionals, but also such personality traits (competencies) that provide the ability and willingness to apply knowledge in professional activities. These competencies should correspond to the educational and professional program, according to which, one of the learning outcomes should be awareness about the field of future activities. And as well as the following skills: conduct statistical research, calculate integrative indicators, create statistical tables, graphs, identify patterns and development trends of the studied object; ability to conduct theoretical and experimental research independently and in a team using scientific equipment and measuring instruments; ability to think abstractly, analyze and synthesize; ability to identify problems, make informed decisions, etc. The formation of mathematical competence based on real processes and conditions in the aviation industry is carried out during the course of laboratory works in mathematical statistics. In particular, in the laboratory work "Statistical determination of probability", the collection and systematization of statistical material on the basis of data from databases of the websites "Australian Transport Safety Bureau", "Federal Aviation Administration", "Flight Safety Foundation" and other sources was conducted. There are five main stages in this work: 1) Theoretical information on the subject of laboratory work; 2) sample to laboratory work; 3) individual tasks for cadets; 4) instructions to implementation of laboratory work; 5) control questions.
